Segmented

December 2014

Segmented is a division of the image into differing planes, and a partitioning of bodies towards abstraction. These sets are created in studio, using plywood and various supports, emphasizing the monocular view of the camera. Each image begins with a rudimentary idea which becomes refined through exploring my own physical limitations and collaborative improvisation with models, dancers and performers. Once the layout of the picture is established, the set is assembled, and tweaked, for the camera while the pose is refined. Alluding to compositional strategies of collage and photomontage, the apparent three dimensional space of the studio is interrupted by graphic blocks of wood segmenting bodies into sculptural elements.
