Welcome to the Bavarian Garden

June 2015

Does Bavaria exist?

As a small child I said my prayers in German, yet I didn't understand the language. For a time I was surrounded by a Black Forest aesthetic: würsty holiday meals, black lettered wall hangings, cuckoo clocks, oompahs and my favorite Uncle Otto. And then it disappeared.

Now I think I've been making its imagined mountains into sculptures my whole life. Take Walter Abish, Susan Sontag, Mad King Ludwig, my Oma: throw them into a bag, shake it up and toss it in the air.
I'm not completely comfortable sitting here in a pile of confetti.
